SIGCAS Outstanding Service Award 2000
2000 SIGCAS Outstanding Service Award Recipient
TOM JEWETT,
California State University Long Beach

The SIGCAS Outstanding Service Award is presented annually to a SIGCAS member for outstanding service to SIGCAS in carrying out responsibilities that foster the viability of SIGCAS and enable it to continue to make a contribution to the field of computing in the context of its stated mission.
Professor Tom Jewett has earned the first SIGCAS Service Award for the outstanding job he has done in the role of the C&S Editor, which he assumed in 1996 as a result of a casual offer to become more active in SIGCAS at the last SIGCAS CQL Symposium. Before he could change his mind, he was recruited on the spot to the C&S Editor. As soon as he assumed the editorial reigns, he implemented ideas for new columns, began soliciting excellent articles, and brought C&S into the electronic publishing age. He also created the excellent C&S web site that is linked to from the ACM page. Since Tom has been Editor, Computers & Society has been delivered complete and on time every quarter for the past 5 years. Tom has also served on the SIGCAS Executive Committee, served on the 1998 ACM Policy Conference Program Committee, and set up the SIGCAS International Student Research Project found at the SIGCAS web site. For all of this outstanding service to SIGCAS, we laud Tom with the first SIGCAS Service Award.
